As we have been reporting for the whole of last week, tech giant Apple Inc. (ticker: AAPL) held its annual fall event from its headquarters in Cupertino, California. Still, it was streamed live on its website for the second year running in the coronavirus pandemic era.

As expected, Apple launched the latest instalment of its flagship product iPhone. The new product is the iPhone 13, and it comes in four versions; the iPhone 13 mini, the iPhone 13, the iPhone 13 Pro, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max. All these will be available for purchase both in the U.S. and overseas from next week on Friday, September 24, 2021, and they will cost a decent $699 for the iPhone mini and $1,099 for the iPhone 13 Pro Max.

iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13

Design and display

Looking at the design alone, the iPhone 13 is largely unchanged from its predecessor, the iPhone 12. The few notable differences between the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 13 are that the two rear cameras are positioned diagonally on the iPhone 13. The notch at its top display has been contracted by 20%. This change gives the iPhone 13 more screen real estate.

More about screen display, the iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 also have new Super Retina XDR displays. The company said at the launch that these new displays are 28% brighter than the iPhone 12.

We live in a fast world where every second counts and Apple had that in mind when designing the iPhone 13. The new smartphone comes with a new 5-nanometer A15 Bionic chip, and it features six cores with different functions. Of these, two are high-performance cores for tasks requiring the phone to do with high intensity, and the other four are left to complete less intensive tasks. With these, the company said that the iPhone 13’s processing speed is 50% faster than its competitors. Additionally, the chip’s Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) offers 30% better performance, according to Apple.

Instagram models, TikTok influencers, amateur and professional photographers, and video enthusiasts will enjoy the new iPhone 13. At the launch yesterday, Apple stated that the iPhone 13 comes with an all-new wide-angle camera system “that gathers 47% more light for less noise.” For focus and crystal clear photos and videos even in low-light settings, the cameras on the iPhone 13 have sensor-shift image stabilization, and the ultra-wide camera is also improved for low-light shots.

When it comes to video, the new phone comes with a new video feature called Cinematic Mode, allowing users to quickly change the point of focus for their videos, making it possible to make Hollywood-style movies with the iPhone. Apple is technically telling us that the phone can shoot the next box office blockbuster or Netflix hit series using its smartphone with these new features. The company explained that the Cinematic Mode feature could recognize when someone enters the frame and automatically changes focus. If you look away from the camera, it will also automatically change focus. Apple attributed the capability of this cool feature to the 5-nanometer A15 Bionic chip’s neural engine.

Over the past few years, the iPhone battery has been under scrutiny for its inability to last long durations of time. However, Apple has been improving its batteries in every iPhone model released, and the iPhone 13 is no different. At the launch yesterday, the company said that the iPhone 13 has better battery life than the iPhone 12. Apple stated that iPhone 13 mini gets an hour and a half more battery life, and the iPhone 13 battery will give users two and a half more hours than its predecessor.

Good, classy things don’t come cheap, and we know Apple products are the definition of class. The iPhone 13 mini and the iPhone 13 each boast 128GB of space, and they are priced at $699 and $799, respectively.

iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max come in four colours: gold, silver, graphite, and the new sierra blue. These versions also have their notches shrunk by 20% to improve the overall screen size, just like the mini and the 13.

When it comes to graphics, the iPhone 13 Pro and the Pro Max come with better capabilities than the iPhone 13 because their GPU provides 50% better performance compared to the iPhone 13’s 30%.

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro max are also superior to the iPhone 13 mini and the iPhone 13 when it comes to the display. The Pro versions of the iPhone 13 come with new XDR Super Retina displays with ProMotion technology which allows the screen rate to go as high as 120Hz and as low as 10Hz depending on different tasks. While performing high-intensity tasks like playing video games on the iPhone 13 Pro and the Pro Max screen will refresh up to 120 times per second. The company said that the ProMotion technology would automatically change the smartphone’s screen’s refresh rate depending on what the user is doing. For example, if a user scrolls down an article with text and images, the speed will increase through the text part and then drop automatically when looking at a static image.

The iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max come with a new camera system that includes the telephoto lens with 3x zoom. These respectively provide 92% and 2.2x improvement in low-light image and video quality. The new camera will also allow users to take better photos in low-light environments courtesy of an ultra-wide-angle lens and a wide-angle sensor.

While at the launch yesterday, Apple said that the new ultra-wide-angle lens for its iPhone 13 Pro lines would allow for macro photography for shooting minute details, and the cameras also support night mode.

Like the iPhone 13 mini and the iPhone 13, the Pro lines also have Cinematic Mode capability to capture videos. Apple said it would add ProRes video for professional video capture later this year for the iPhone 13 Pro and the Pro Max.

The iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max get improved battery life. The company said that the 13 Pro has one and a half hours longer than the 12 Pro while the 13 Pro Max has two and half hours longer than the 12 Pro Max so that users can do more with their devices without plugging in.

The iPhone 13 Pro starts from $999, and the iPhone Pro Max starts from $1,099. All these products can be pre-ordered now, but as mentioned earlier, they will be available from September 24.

iPhone performance

It is common knowledge that the iPhone is Apple’s most important and most popular product. The company earns its most considerable portion of revenue from iPhone sales, having cemented a loyal fan base over the years that are always looking forward to ordering the latest release of their favourite device.

In the 2020 fiscal year, Apple’s total revenue was $274.5 billion, and sales from the iPhone accounted for $137.8 billion of the total revenue. Analysts expect the company to keep raking in the billions of dollars from iPhones, especially after the release of the highly-anticipated iPhone 13.
